Description:Births in the United States declined in 1993 for the third consecutive year, to just over 4 million. The 1993 total of 4,000,240 births was 2 percent lower than in 1992 and 4 percent below the most recent high point of 4,158,212 in 1990. The birth rate per 1,000 total population declined to 15.5, its lowest point in 15 years. The fertility rate per 1,000 women aged 15-44 years was 67.6, 2 percent lower than in 1992 and 5 percent below the 1990 level.
