  In 1990, 2,148,463 deaths were registered in the United States, 19,536 fewer than the record high number of 2,167,999 deaths recorded in 198S and 2,003 fewer deaths than in 19S9. The ; death rate for 1990 was 863.8 deaths per 100,000 population, 1 percent below the rate of 871.3 in 19S9 and 3 percent below the rate in 1988.
