  In 1990, 2,148,463 deaths were registered in the United States, 19,536 fewer than the record high number of 2,167,999 deaths recorded in 198S and 2,003 fewer deaths than in 19S9. The
  
  death rate for 1990 was 863.8 deaths per 100,000 population, 1 percent below the rate of 871.3 in 19S9 and 3 percent below the rate in 1988. Provisional data for 1991 suggest that the death rate continued to decline.
