Description:In 1980 a total of 1,989,841 resident deaths occurred in the United States, 76,000 more than in the previous year. Contributing to the magnitude of the increase between the two years were outbreaks of influenza in 19801 as well as a low level of mortality in 1979. In that year-free of influenza out- breaks-death rates reached a record low, and life expectancy reached a new peak for the United States. From 1979 to 1980 life expectancy declined from 73.9 to 73.7 years, interrupting the long-term trend of increasing life expectancy. Also reflect- ing the outbreaks of influenza in 1980 and the low mortality in 1979 were higher death rates in 1980 for a number of the leading causes of death, most strikingly for Pneumonia and influenza and for Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and allied conditions. Rates were also higher for the three leading causes of death-Diseases of heati, Malignant neoplasms, in- cluding neoplasms of lymphatic and hematopoietic tissues (cancer); and Cerebrovascular diseases (stroke)-which ac- counted for about two out of three deaths in the United States. Death rates for Homicide and legal intervention reached a new peak in 1980; and rates for Septicemia continued the rapid increase that has been observed in recent years.
