Hepatitis significa inflamación del hígado. El hígado es un órgano vital que procesa nutrientes, filtra la sangre y combate las infecciones. Cuando el hígado está inflamado o dañado, su función puede verse afectada. El uso excesivo de alcohol, las toxinas, algunos medicamentos y ciertas afecciones médicas pueden causar hepatitis.

La mayoría de las veces la hepatitis es provocada por un virus. En los Estados Unidos, los tipos más frecuentes de hepatitis viral son la hepatitis A, la hepatitis B y la hepatitis C. Si bien todos los tipos de hepatitis viral pueden causar síntomas similares, se propagan de maneras diferentes, tienen tratamientos diferentes y algunos son más graves que otros.www.cdc.gov/hepatitis
