  • Description:
In the half century since its establishment as a research agency, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has seen significant challenges and milestones in its mission to protect workers. Created in 1971, following the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, NIOSH strives to protect the U.S. workforce through its research on potential workplace hazards and exposures and its support of training for current and future safety and health professionals.

This year’s edition of the NIOSH Bibliography highlights the institute’s accomplishments in 2020 but also celebrates its progress over the first 50 years, from its publication of the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards and evaluations of firefighter and other worker deaths to its administration of the World Trade Center Health Program and support of responder and workforce safety in crises such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Ebola outbreak, and COVID-19 pandemic.

The recommendations and guidance produced by NIOSH as a result of its scientific endeavors over the past half-century reflect its continuing mission to make workplaces healthier and safer. In alignment with the National Occupational Research Agenda, NIOSH supports workplace health and safety advancements in the sectors of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing; Construction; Healthcare and Social Assistance; Manufacturing; Mining; Oil and Gas Extraction; Public Safety; Services; Wholesale and Retail Trade; and Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities. Today the institute has facilities in eight locations across the country.
