There were also concerning increases in students' experiences of violence at school; and, From 2013 to 2023, 10-year trends were similar to what data showed in 2021. There were decreases in students' use of substances. There were increases in students' experiences of violence, signs of poor mental health, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Students' sexual activity decreased, but so did their protective sexual behaviors, like condom use. This report is a companion to the Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Summary & Trends Report: 2013–2023 and focuses on high school students' dietary, physical activity, and sleep behaviors. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) developed this report to highlight the national Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) data. YRBS data are collected every 2 years among a nationally representative sample of U.S. high school students. Overall, U.S. high school students did not engage in adequate levels of healthy dietary, physical activity, and sleep behaviors. The 10-year trends from 2013 to 2023 also show a decline in healthy dietary, physical activity, and sleep behaviors. Data show a decline in the percentage of students eating fruit, vegetables, and breakfast daily. Data also highlight a decline across healthy physical activity and sleep behaviors, including daily physical activity, muscle-strengthening, attending daily physical education classes, sports team participation, and getting at least 8 hours of sleep. Both female students and LGBTQ+ students are less likely than their peers to engage in most of these health behaviors that help prevent chronic diseases. This summary highlights continuing concerns and signs of progress from the most recent YRBS data collected during 2023 for dietary, physical activity, and sleep behaviors. Promote awareness of abuse and exploitation, and support related prevention efforts as they relate to a person with dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. This action item recognizes the need to ensure that individuals with cognitive impairment do not become victims of abuse and exploitation, including financial exploitation. The need to address financial fraud and exploitation has not been a traditional area for public health focus, but increasingly, the potentially devastating effect—on physical, mental, and financial well-being—is being recognized. In many cases, exploitation occurs at the hands of family members or caregivers, creating further devastation for the individual being exploited. Through collaboration with appropriate partners such as elder law attorneys, financial professionals, and primary care professionals, public health and aging services professionals at the state and local levels can play a key role in assisting those with cognitive impairment to avoid the potentially devastating impact of financial exploitation and abuse. The system includes a nationally representative Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and separate school-based YRBSs conducted by states, tribes, territories, and local school districts. For the 2023 national YRBS, CDC made changes to the sampling method, survey administration mode, and questionnaire. Specifically, the sampling design added an American Indian or Alaska Native (AI/AN) supplemental sample so that separate, precise estimates could be made for AI/AN high school students, in addition to the usual sample designed to provide nationally representative data for the population of students in grades 9–12. To decrease the time needed to collect and process data, CDC changed the survey administration mode from paper-and-pencil scannable booklets to a tablet-based electronic survey. To provide national data on topics of emerging interest, CDC added new questions to the questionnaire. These new questions assessed social media use, experiences of racism at school, adverse childhood experiences, transgender identity, consent for sexual contact, and unfair discipline at school. Public health practitioners and researchers can use YRBSS data to examine the prevalence of youth health behaviors, experiences, and conditions; monitor trends; and guide interventions. This overview report describes 2023 YRBSS survey methodology, including sampling, data collection, data processing, weighting, and data analyses. The 2023 YRBS participation map, survey response rates, and a detailed examination of student demographic characteristics are included in this report. During 2023, in addition to the national YRBS, 68 site-level surveys were administered to high school students in 39 states, three tribal governments, five territories, and 21 local school districts. These site-level surveys use site-specific questionnaires that are similar to the national YRBS questionnaire but are modified to meet sites’ needs. This overview and methods report is one of 11 featured in this MMWR supplement, which reports results from the 2023 national YRBS but does not include data from the 68 site-level surveys. CDC’s Alcohol-Related Disease Impact application was used to estimate the average annual number and age- standardized rate of deaths from excessive alcohol use in the United States based on 58 alcohol-related causes of death during three periods (2016–2017, 2018–2019, and 2020–2021). Average annual number of deaths from excessive alcohol use increased 29.3%, from 137,927 during 2016–2017 to 178,307 during 2020–2021; age-standardized alcohol-related death rates increased from 38.1 to 47.6 per 100,000 population. During this time, deaths from excessive alcohol use among males increased 26.8%, from 94,362 per year to 119,606, and among females increased 34.7%, from 43,565 per year to 58,701. Implementation of evidence-based policies that reduce the availability and accessibility of alcohol and increase its price (e.g., policies that reduce the number and concentration of places selling alcohol and increase alcohol taxes) could reduce excessive alcohol use and alcohol-related deaths.
