Description:Based on data collected in the 1977 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), an estimated 11.0 million office visits were made at which the principal or first-listed diagnosis was diabetes mellitus. The estimates presented in this report are based on data collected in the NAhlCS, an annual probability sample survey of approximately 3,000 non federally employed physicians who are in office-based practice in the conterminous United States. Excluded from the NAh4CS are hospital-based physicians; those specializing in anesthesiology, pathology, or radiology; and those who are principally engaged in teaching, research, or administration. The survey sample is selected with the cooperation of the American Medical Association and American Osteopathic Association from their lists of nonfederally employed doctors of medicine and osteopathy who are principally engaged in office-based practice.
