Description:According to the results of a natiomd survey of households conducted in 1973 by the National Center for Health Statistics, one-fifth of all births (13.9 million out of 68.2 million) to mothers 15-44 years would not have occurred if these women had given birth onIy to those ba bies they reported as “wanted" at the time of conception. These estimates are based on answers to direct questions about the “wontedness” of each pregnancy that were asked during personal interviews with a sample of women aged 15-44 years who had ever been married or had children of their own living in the househoId. These women participated in the National Survey of FamiIy Growth which is based on a multistage area-probability sample of households in the conterminous United States. The interviews for CycIe I of the survey were conducted during an 8-month period the midpoint of which was September 13, 1973.
