Skin cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in the United States, with nearly 5 million persons treated each year, at an estimated cost of $8.1 billion dollars (<xref rid="b1-656" ref-type="bibr">1</xref>&#x02013;<xref rid="b4-656" ref-type="bibr">4</xref>). Melanoma is responsible for most skin cancer&#x02013;related deaths, causing approximately 9,000 deaths annually (<xref rid="b5-656" ref-type="bibr">5</xref>).</p><p>Most cases of skin cancer are preventable, yet skin cancer rates have continued to increase in the United States during the past 35 years (<xref rid="b6-656" ref-type="bibr">6</xref>). Despite efforts to increase use of sun protection, approximately one third of U.S. residents reported being sunburned in the past year (<xref rid="b7-656" ref-type="bibr">7</xref>). In addition, indoor tanning greatly increases the risk for developing skin cancer, yet one out of every three non-Hispanic white women aged 16&#x02013;25 years engages in indoor tanning each year (<xref rid="b8-656" ref-type="bibr">8</xref>).</p><p>The purpose of the Surgeon General&#x02019;s Call to Action is to increase awareness of skin cancer as a national public health priority, as well as to engage stakeholders across the nation, including policy makers; members of the business, health care, and education sectors; community, nonprofit, and faith-based organizations; and individuals and families, all with concrete strategies to reduce the risk for skin cancer.</p></body><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="b1-656"><label>1</label><element-citation publication-type="journal"><person-group person-group-type="author"><name><surname>Lomas</surname><given-names>A</given-names></name><name><surname>Leonardi-Bee</surname><given-names>J</given-names></name><name><surname>Bath-Hextall</surname><given-names>F</given-names></name></person-group><article-title>A systematic review of worldwide incidence of nonmelanoma skin cancer</article-title><source>Br J Dermatol</source><year>2012</year><volume>166</volume><fpage>1069</fpage><lpage>80</lpage><pub-id pub-id-type="pmid">22251204</pub-id></element-citation></ref><ref id="b2-656"><label>2</label><element-citation publication-type="journal"><person-group person-group-type="author"><name><surname>Rogers</surname><given-names>HW</given-names></name><name><surname>Weinstock</surname><given-names>MA</given-names></name><name><surname>Harris</surname><given-names>AR</given-names></name><etal/></person-group><article-title>Incidence estimate of nonmelanoma skin cancer in the United States, 2006</article-title><source>Arch Dermatol</source><year>2010</year><volume>146</volume><fpage>283</fpage><lpage>7</lpage><pub-id pub-id-type="pmid">20231499</pub-id></element-citation></ref><ref id="b3-656"><label>3</label><element-citation publication-type="journal"><person-group person-group-type="author"><name><surname>Armstrong</surname><given-names>BK</given-names></name><name><surname>Kricker</surname><given-names>A</given-names></name></person-group><article-title>The epidemiology of UV induced skin cancer</article-title><source>J Photochem Photobiol B</source><year>2001</year><volume>63</volume><fpage>8</fpage><lpage>18</lpage><pub-id pub-id-type="pmid">11684447</pub-id></element-citation></ref><ref id="b4-656"><label>4</label><element-citation publication-type="journal"><person-group person-group-type="author"><name><surname>Guy</surname><given-names>GP</given-names></name><name><surname>Machlin</surname><given-names>S</given-names></name><name><surname>Ekwueme</surname><given-names>DU</given-names></name><name><surname>Yabroff</surname><given-names>KR</given-names></name></person-group><article-title>Prevalence and costs of skin cancer treatment in the US, 2002&#x02013;2006 and 2007&#x02013;2011</article-title><source>Am J Prev Med</source><comment>In press</comment><year>2014</year></element-citation></ref><ref id="b5-656"><label>5</label><element-citation publication-type="book"><collab>US Cancer Statistics Working Group</collab><source>United States Cancer Statistics: 1999&#x02013;2010 incidence and mortality</source><publisher-loc>Atlanta, GA</publisher-loc><publisher-name>US Department of Health and Human Services, CDC, National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute</publisher-name><year>2013</year><comment>Available at <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://www.cdc.gov/uscs">http://www.cdc.gov/uscs</ext-link></comment></element-citation></ref><ref id="b6-656"><label>6</label><element-citation publication-type="book"><collab>National Cancer Institute</collab><source>Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program.
