"What are our priorities? The National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety(NCCRAHS) is one of 11 agricultural research and prevention centers funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Funded through a 5-year cooperative agreement (2014- 2019), this is the only Center with an exclusive focus on childhood agricultural safety. NCCRAHS works with partners in industry, labor, trade associations, professional organizations, and academia. The Center focuses on preventing traumatic injuries among children who work, live or play on farms. What do we do? 1. Develop and implement the national childhood agricultural injury prevention strategy with key partners. 2. Conduct research and promote interventions. 3. Communicate with stakeholders. 4. Generate consensus and build capacity for sustained strategies. 5. Collaborate with major agricultural organizations, health and safety professionals, and youth-serving groups. What have we accomplished? 1. Published 2017 Child Agricultural Injury Fact Sheet, a summary of injury statistics and resources. It garnered 175 views since January, 2017. 2. Completed pilot testing and redesign of CultivateSafety.orgto provide easier access to agricultural safety information and resources for farmers, ranchers, supervisors and media. 3. Updated and released the first 20 interactive Agricultural Youth Work Guidelines. Parents and work supervisors can use these guidelines to help determine if a youth is ready to perform a job. 4. Updated AgInjuryNews.org,a searchable, web-based database containing over 3,000 agricultural injury news reports. There are more than 300 registered users, including the Bureau of Labor Statistics data specialists. 5. Published an issue of Journal of Agromedicine dedicated to the Socio-Ecological Model and agricultural injury prevention, with a focus on children. 6. Published 16-page National Farm Medicine Center/National Children's Center 2016 Year in Review. What's next? 1. Update and release 30 additional Agricultural Youth Work Guidelines, along with an "Adults Only" resource detailing jobs that should be performed by adults only. 2. Plan and implement hands-on and informational exhibits at 2018 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, including an interactive Safe Play Area. 3. Introduce the updated and expanded Resource Library, an online hub of childhood agricultural health and safety resources that will feature filter/search and "checkout" options. 4. Implement social media strategy based on analytics gathered in 2017, with the goal of reaching the farm- and ranch-level end user; conduct a pilot study evaluating messaging approaches across different social media platforms" - NIOSHTIC-2
