King, a bacteriologist at the US Centers for Disease Control who studied meningitis in infants, <italic>Elizabethkingia meningoseptica</italic> is a gram-negative, obligate aerobic bacterium in the family <italic>Flavobacteriaceae </italic>(<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">Figure</xref>). King named the bacterium <italic>Flavobacterium</italic> (from the Latin <italic>flavus</italic>, &#x0201c;yellow&#x0201d;) <italic>meningosepticum</italic>, and in 1994 it was reclassified in the genus <italic>Chryseobacterium</italic> (from the Greek <italic>chryseos</italic>, &#x0201c;golden&#x0201d;).
