Description:Dr. John Fox, Virus Laboratory, Tulane University, New Orleans, reports the isolation of a virus, as yet untyped, from the stool of PSU ase No. La-2. This non-paralytic case developed meningeal signs 7 days after inoculation with Lilly Vaccine and the spinal fluid contained 130 °®lls. In the stool of two siblings of this patient a cytopathic agent Was found which Dr. Fox has now identified as type 2 poliomyelitis virus.
Dr. Carl Larson and Dr. Karl Eklund, Rocky Mountain Laboratory, Hilton, report isolation of type 1 polio virus from the stool of PSU Case Numbers Ida-4 and Ida-5. Type 1 virus has also been grown from throat and feces of a sibling of PSU Case No. Ida-7. Drs. Larson and Eklund are now examining stools obtained from the families of 17 Cutter vaccinates in the Pocatello area. Type 1 virus has been isolated from one of these vaccinates, who developed a mild, transient illness 6 days after vaccination. A non-vaccinated sibling who has been asymptomatic was also found to be shedding type 1 virus.
Three new vaccinated cases were accepted today, one from Louisiana, and two from Pennsylvania. The two Pennsylvania cases developed paralysis in the left arm 12 and 14 days respectively after inoculation in the left deltoid with Wyeth Vaccine. Of five Wyeth associated cases now accepted, three have shown a correlation between site of inoculation and site of first paralysis.
Vaccinated cases total 77 at 12:00 noon (5-17-55) (Table l). Suspect cases are under investigation in California, Idaho, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Illinois.
