"Industrial hygiene is the science of protecting man's health through the control of the work environment. Encompassing the entire environmental field, this book is a compilation of the diversity of expertise needed to attain competency in the recognition, evaluation, and prescription of methods to control environmental problems. It is intended for use as a text in training courses or universities to introduce graduate students or newcomers with basic science degrees to the field of industrial hygiene and environmental health. It is also intended to introduce persons having a specialty in one of the facets of industrial hygiene to all other facets of the profession. The occupational ecological system is treated as a significant part of the total ecological system. The forty-eight authors of fifty chapters review the uses of mathematics, chemistry, biochemistry, and physiology, and provide an introduction to industrial toxicology. Sampling and measuring techniques are reviewed in chapters on calibration; known concentrations of air contaminants; determining concentrations of aerosols, vapors, and gases; spectrophotometry; emission spectroscopy; gas chromatography; and thermal standards and measurements. Chapters cover hearing safety, radiation safety, heat stress, and the influence of contaminants on the skin and respiratory system. The control of the industrial environment is treated in chapters on ventilation, noise, air flow systems, exhaust systems, solid waste, and exposure to heat and cold.
