Description:Statistical design and data analysis methodologies useful for conducting industrial hygiene studies were reviewed. General areas of industrial hygiene where statistical theory could be applied were discussed. These include experimental studies that investigate planned interventions of determinant factors suspected of altering the phenomenon under study and observational surveys and studies that do not involve human intervention. The need for utilizing statistics in industrial hygiene research was considered. Applying statistical techniques to determining threshold and low risk levels was discussed. Possible contributions of statistical methods toward recognizing chemical and physical stressors in the workplace were reviewed. Basic statistical theory applicable to occupational exposure data was discussed. Distributional models that could identify the contributions of various sources of variation to overall or net random errors in occupational exposure estimates were described. The basic principles of statistical experimental design and data analysis applicable to industrial hygiene research were reviewed. Recommended study designs for estimating individual occupational exposures and distributions of exposure in an industrial hygiene survey were discussed. Applied methods for performing formal statistical analyses of occupational exposure data were illustrated. [Description provided by NIOSH]
