Description:Increased numbers of cases of diabetes mellitus have been reported in the rural areas of Japan, stemming mainly from changes in life styles and dietary habits. A mass survey was begun in 1966 and continued through 1977 to determine the incidence of diabetes mellitus through measurements of urine sugar, 50gGTT and insulin among rural inhabitants engaged in the activity of planting rice. The number of urine sugar positive people increased. Diabetic increases were noted particularly in individuals in their 50s during 1971 and in their 60s during 1974. The frequency of this rise in diabetes mellitus as determined by urine sugar screening was 2.5 percent for men and 0.7 percent for women. When determined by measurement of 50gGTT the increase was 8.4 percent for men and 7.8 percent for women with a 8.1 increase in the occurrence of the disease for men and women combined. Five patterns of blood insulin measurement were classified in an attempt to recognize the secretion pattern. The insulin secretion rate at 30 minutes after 50 gram glucose administration was assessed. In both men and women the average of insulin decreased in 1978. The low reaction pattern was noted in 83 percent and the slow type in 64 percent. [Description provided by NIOSH]
