Description:The mechanisms of bis-(chloromethyl)-ether (542881) formation in gas phase and in polar and nonpolar condensed phases are studied. Activation energies for formation in gas phases, in carbon- tetrachloride (56235), and methylene-chloride are 19.8, 18.9, and 5.25 kilocalories per mole, respectively. An evaluation of the bis- (chloromethyl)-ether trapping techniques and analytical methods is included. No detectable bis(chloromethyl)-ether was found in on site surveys of two textile finishing plants, a fertilizer plant, two dye manufacturing plants, two foundries, and a hospital procedure resin production laboratory. The highest amounts of formaldehyde (50000), 6ppm, were found in foundry and dye manufacturing plants; only 1 to 2ppm were found in other industries. The highest total chloride, 21ppm, was found in a fertilizer plant; only 1 to 3ppm, if at all, were found in other industries. (Contract No. 210-75-0056)
