Description:Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and a leading cause of death worldwide. COPD combines two lung diseases, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Both conditions frequently exist together and cause obstruction of airflow that interferes with normal breathing. Long-term cigarette smoking is the most important risk factor for COPD. Spirometry is required to make a diagnosis of COPD. Even though there is no cure for COPD, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments have improved adverse respiratory symptoms, quality of life, and exercise capacity, as well as modifying the disease progression.
