Description:An experimental design was developed to provide information which could be used to achieve airborne nitrous-oxide (10024972) (N2O) exposures for dental personnel of less than 25 parts per million as a time weighted average per dental procedure. The activities of various federal, professional and trade associations related to the dental field were noted. The physical properties of N2O were reviewed, along with systemic effects, human reproductive effects, animal studies, carcinogenicity, liver and kidney effects, and central nervous system effects. The concentrations of N2O in dental operatories measured during NIOSH hazard evaluation and technical assistance studies were considered, and the sources and distribution of N2O in dental suites were discussed. Principles of controlling the exposures were discussed, including the use of scavenging machines and proper ventilation systems.
