Description:A transportable gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was developed for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of volatile organic compounds present at chemical waste sites. The instrument was based on a Finnigan Ion Trap Detector. It was designed for field observations and to meet higher level data quality objectives. Trials were performed without significant failure of the device. Quantitative and qualitative analysis for 68 target compounds was performed every 25 minutes in the field. Results revealed a high degree of specificity. Parts per trillion detection limits were found for many compounds. The instrument components were integrated to produce an automated instrument that could be operated with minimal training. It could be operated in a continuous mode, pausing only for sample loading and data file specification.
