Description:Four cases of silicosis occurring among workers in the Madras Stone Industry were examined. The cases had been working in the industry for a period of 10 to 20 years. Of the four cases of silicosis and ten cases of tuberculosis identified at this factory, over 85% of the subjects were between 40 and 49 years of age. X-ray mottling was noted in 85.7% of the cases, while sputum AFB was positive in 71% of the cases. The first case involved a 38 year old man working in a factory as a mixer of sand and stones into fine powder. The second case involved a 36 year old man working as a grinder operator in the same company. The third case involved a 30 year old man at the same company whose job was to press sand stones into molds. The fourth patient was a 36 year old man working at the same factory for 12 years. The pathogenesis, pathology, clinical features, physiology, complications, prognosis, and treatment were defined for both simple silicosis and silicon tuberculosis.
