Description:In order to investigate the behavior of dusts in mixtures, the rat intratracheal test was utilized to examine anhydrite (14798040), cadmium-sulfide (1306236), and titanium-dioxide (13463677) dusts separately or in mixtures with Doorentruper quartz (14808607) or polyvinylpyridine-N-oxide (9045812) (PVNO). In the various mixtures PVNO demonstrated variable behavior, such as inhibitory with quartz and stimulatory with cadmium-sulfide. A similar behavior was noted with anhydrite: it acted as an inhibitor of quartz whereas with the bounding catalyzer, a mixture of iron (7439896) and potassium- sulfide (1312738), no inhibition was noted. The physical characteristics of the dust mixtures used indicated that the act of mixing imparted to the dusts properties which cannot be calculated on an additive basis. The authors state that the mixture will thus react totally differently from the individual dusts applied separately. These observations result in the suggestion that there may be a general principal here, namely that each dust can demonstrate different behavior in different dust mixtures.
