Description:An in depth survey of possible occupational hazards was made at Sodus Hardchrome Inc. (SIC-3471), Sodus, Michigan. At this facility hardchrome plating of high tensile strength steel parts was carried out. These parts, including hydraulic cylinders ranging in size from 5 inches to 28 feet long, were used in construction, materials handling, and other heavy equipment. Plating solutions contain 28 ounces/gallon of chromic-acid (1333820) and were maintained at 130 to 140 degrees-F. All of the plating tanks had push/pull ventilation systems. The primary hazards to the workers arose from chromic-acid and sulfuric-acid (7664939) exposures. Personal and area air samples were collected for 3 consecutive days. Mean concentrations for all eight personal samples was 0.004mg/m3 for chromium-VI (18540299) and 0.2mg/m3 for sulfuric-acid. Area samples for total chromium ranged from less than 0.007mg/m3 to 0.057mg/m3. Sulfuric-acid concentrations ranged from 0.2 to 0.7mg/m3. These findings indicated that the chemical hazards were effectively controlled. When examining individual tanks in the process, it was determined that the control of hexavalent chromium emissions for tank 5 could be improved by increasing the exhaust rate and exercising more caution in rinsing chromic-acid off the plated parts.
