Description:A walkthrough survey of Snyder Laboratories (SIC-3841), Dover, Ohio was conducted in January, 1984. The purpose of the survey was to obtain data and determine the feasibility of including the facility in a NIOSH industrywide mortality/industrial hygiene study of ethylene-oxide (75218) exposure. The facility manufactured medical products and used ethylene-oxide to sterilize the products. The company employed 200 workers. Of these, 17 were potentially exposed to ethylene-oxide during sterilization, quality control, maintenance, and finishing operations. Engineering controls consisted of local exhaust ventilation of the sterilizers, preconditioning chambers, aeration chambers, and continuous monitoring of sterilizer areas. Company monitoring data indicated personal exposures of 0.4 to 24.1 parts per million. The company required preemployment physical examinations. A safety committee composed of management and union employees routinely inspected the facility. Only five accidents occurred during the preceding 10 years. A review of personnel records indicated that the facility could contribute approximately 1,800 person years to the industrywide study. The authors conclude that the facility meets the eligibility requirements for the industrywide study. Recommendations include continuing industrial hygiene ethylene-oxide monitoring and periodically inspecting the ventilation systems.
