Description:Report of visits to Hooker Chemical and Plastics Corporation, which is the only company in the U.S. making 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (79345), and White Chemical Corporation, which is the largest user. The chemical processes involved, medical aspects, labeling and posting, personal protective equipment and clothing, employee information and training, work practices, sanitation and environmental monitoring are given for each plant. No health or serious handling problems are reported in spite of the high toxicity of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane; this is ascribed to awareness of the problem and use of closed systems almost totally outdoors. Both companies make use of the Manufacturing Chemists Association Chemical Safety Data Sheet in their training programs; a copy of it is included in this report. (Contract No. 099-74-0031)
