Description:Evaluation of hazards from a contact cement containing primarily polychloroprene, mineral spirits, and toluene used in manufacturing wooden overhead doors. Eight-hour time weighted concentration is given for each component of the cement. Survey of exposed workers does not show adverse clinical effects
but toluene (108883) is determined toxic at the concentrations found in the workers' environment for the gluing area and vicinity. Contact of the eyes with liquid toluene results in burns of varying degrees of severity, producing opacities and corneal burns. Toluene is also a skin irritant although poorly absorbed by the intact skin. Recommendations include improvement of ventilation in the gluing area, provision of respirators, and careful handling, transportation and storage of solvents. [Description provided by NIOSH]
