Description:Medical questionnaires were distributed to 21 employees, and air sampling and ventilation system measurements were conducted on August 22 to 24, 1978 at the Western Electric Company (SIC-3612), Denver, Colorado, in response to a request from an authorized employee representative to evaluate worker exposure to a urethane (51796) foam packaging system (Instapak). Measured concentrations of toluene-diisocyanate (26471625) (TDI) and diphenyl-methane- diisocyanate (101688) (MDI) were below the limits of detection in seven area samples and nine personal samples. The OSHA standards for these compounds are 0.14 and 0.2 milligrams per cubic meter (ceiling), respectively. Small amounts of tetrachloroethylene (127184) (perchloroethylene) and methyldicyclohexylamine (7560830) were detected at hygienically insignificant concentrations. Five workers reported shortness of breath associated with instapak, and four perceived a foul taste. The investigator concludes that there was a possible prior sensitization of some employees to diisocyanates and recommends the use of goggles and hand and arm protection to minimize possible contact with liquid diisocyanate.
