Description:An industrial hygiene survey was performed at the NIOSH facilities in Rockville, Maryland, on November 9, 1977. The survey was performed pursuant to a memorandum issued by the NIOSH Safety Officer requiring an annual industrial hygiene inspection of all NIOSH facilities. About 200 employees work at the facility in Maryland. Noise levels in the Xerox rooms were about 79 decibels (dBA), and desk top illumination ranged from 12 to 45 foot candles. Temperature and humidity were within the comfort range for most people. The author recommends repair of faulty switches or replacement of flickering light bulbs, installation of adequate lighting where needed or repositioning of the desks to take advantage of existing light, regular cleaning and maintenance of ventilation ducts, and installation of a small fan or exhaust vent in the cashier's office for ventilation.
