Description:Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed for tungsten (7440337) freon-113 (76131), methylene-chloride (75092), and butyl- cellosolve (111762) at various times from April 1979 to April 1981 in order to investigate a reported high incidence of neonatal death and spontaneous abortion among female workers in one department of Federal Mogul, Metal Removal Tooling Division (SIC-3541), in Chicago, Illinois. Analysis of medical records and survey data revealed 2 neonatal deaths and 4 spontaneous abortions among the 21 women pregnant in 1979, and 7 normal births in 1980. No epidemiological significance could be associated with this data because of the small number of fertile women and pregnancies, and the lack of 9 comparison group. Air samples for Freon-113, methylene-chloride, butyl-cellosolve, and tungsten were below respective OSHA standards of 1000, 500, and 50 parts per million, and 5 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cu m). One of 10 personal air samples for cobalt exceeded the OSHA standard of 0.1mg/cu m. The authors conclude that the existence of a reproductive health hazard at this facility could not be conclusively established. They recommend periodic evaluation of employee solvent exposures, proper work practices, good personal hygiene, prohibition of pregnant women from working as degreasers and implementation of an ongoing medical surveillance program.
