Description:Exposures to methyl-methacrylate (80626) and mercury (7439976) vapors were evaluated on March 26 and May 4, 1981, respectively, at the School of Dental Medicine (SIC-8221), University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The evaluation was requested by the 160 dental school students. Air samples were collected for analysis. Exposures to methyl-methacrylate vapor were well below the OSHA limit of 100 parts per million. Concentrations of mercury in all but one sample were within OSHA limits of 0.1 milligram per cubic meter, the one sample that exceeded this limit was taken in an area with a heavier mercury work load. The authors conclude that no methyl-methacrylate exposure hazard exists, however a potential hazard from mercury vapor exposure is present. Recommendations are included for work practice, personal hygiene, and ventilation improvements.
