Description:Environmental air samples were analyzed for polychlorinated- biphenyls (1336363) (PCBs) at the United States Naval Security Group Activity (SIC-9711) in Winter Harbor, Maine, on February 4, 1981. An unidentified individual requested the evaluation on behalf of approximately five affected workers. PCB concentrations ranged from less than 0.05 microgram per cubic meter in building to 4.48 micrograms per cubic meter in another building. The OSHA limit was in effect at this facility. The author concludes that a potential PCB hazard existed in two of the three buildings surveyed. He recommends several safety measures including the use of personal protective equipment, hygiene, respiratory protection, and environmental and medical monitoring to protect workers from PCB exposure.
