  Personal air samples were analyzed for nitrous-oxide (10024972) at the Emory University School of Dentistry (SIC-8221), in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 27, 1981. The evaluation was requested by the Chairman of the Oral Biology Department on behalf of an unspecified number of workers. The average personal exposure to nitrous oxide during the period of administration was above 250 parts per million (ppm) in four of five samples collected, compared with the NIOSH standard of 50ppm. The authors conclude that a health hazard from overexposure to nitrous oxide existed at this facility. They recommend the installation of scavenging equipment, suction machine venting, minimizing speech by the patient during dental procedures, regular preventive maintenance procedures for anesthetic equipment, leak testing of anesthetic equipment, use of an air sweep fan, periodic air monitoring, and employee education.
