  Environmental air sampling was conducted and employee mortality rates studied to determine if workers suffered an excessive number of deaths due to heart disease or cancer from exposure to acrylonitrile (107131), nickel (7440020) and nitrosamines at Armak, Incorporated (SIC-2869) in McCook, Illinois from June to October, 1978. A representative of the International Chemical Workers Union requested the evaluation on behalf of approximately 65 affected workers. No detectable concentrations of the sampled substances were found. Comparison of employee mortality data with the United States White male population revealed no excess heart disease or cancer related deaths. The authors conclude that there was no statistical evidence for increased mortality at this facility due to either cancer or heart disease. They recommend periodic environmental sampling and the routine collection of employee mortality data.
