Description:Complaints of eye and nose irritation and headaches were investigated on June 23, 1983 at Rotepohl Jeweler, Incorporated (SIC- 7231), Cincinnati, Ohio. Evaluation was requested by an unspecified individual for two employees. Air samples were collected in the jewelry shop and an adjacent beauty salon
both were serviced by a common forced air heating/cooling system. Samples were analyzed for contaminants commonly found in beauty shops to determine if substances were transmitted to the jewelry store through the ventilation system. Both jewelry shop employees completed medical and occupational history questionnaires. Employees from three other shops serviced by the same ventilation system were questioned about medical complaints. No contaminants were found in the jewelry shop air samples. In the beauty shop, concentrations of ethanol (64175), methylene-chloride (75092), isopropyl-alcohol (67630), and ammonia (7664417) were below respective evaluation criteria of 1900, 360, 930, and 35 milligrams per cubic meter. The jewelry store workers and workers in adjacent shops reported peculiar odors. The authors conclude that no specific hazard exists, but suggests that the jewelry shop workers may be very sensitive to some chemical used in the beauty salon. They recommend that the air from the salon be vented directly to the outside.
