Description:Employee exposures to solvents during offset printing at the Japan Economic Institute of America, Washington, D.C. (SIC-2740) were investigated. The site visit and environmental survey were performed on February 17, 1982 at the Institute's request. Personal and area air samples for solvent vapors were collected. No solvent exposure was detected during the plate making process. During the printing process, the following solvent exposures were measured: isopropanol (67630), 15.7 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3)
diacetone-alcohol (123422), 1.9mg/m3
xylene (1330207), 8.2mg/m3
butyl-cellosolve (111762), 10.4mg/m3
and total naphtha (8030306), 45.3mg/m3. The NIOSH recommended concentrations for these solvent exposures are 980, 240, 435, 240, and 400mg/m3, respectively. All exposures were well below threshold limit values and the mixture of solvents contained in the printing fluids generated a total exposure of 24.3 percent of the threshold limit value for this mixture. The author concludes that no health hazard due to solvent exposures existed at the time of the survey.
