Description:Environmental air and urine samples were evaluated to determine airborne exposure of workers to cleaning products at Bay Area Hospital, Coos Bay, Oregon, on January 14, 1982, and April 5 to 7, 1982. The evaluation was requested by the housekeeping staff on behalf of 28 workers. Phenol (108952) concentration in urine was 26.5 milligram per gram (mg/g) of creatinine in exposed workers, compared with 9.8mg/g of creatinine in nonexposed workers. The difference was not statistically significant. All air samples for butyl-cellosolve (111762), cellosolve (110805), ethanolamine (141435), formaldehyde (50000), ethylene-glycol (107211), and phenol (108952) were at least 4 percent below all evaluation criteria. Employees had significantly more cough, phlegm, itching of external ear, sinus problems, and symptoms of intoxication at work. Dermatitis occurred in four workers and one nurse. Inhalation was not the main route of absorption. The authors conclude that employees were exposed to chemicals, and the persistence of symptoms indicates that exposure continues. Changes in work practices have eliminated new cases of dermatitis. They recommend the use of impervious gloves. Workers with dermatitis should be transferred to other jobs and treated. Skin should be washed immediately after contact with cleaning products. Phenolic disinfectants should be replaced with quaternary-ammonium disinfectants.
