Description:Breathing zone air samples were analyzed for chemicals and contaminants at the Cities Service Company Butyl Rubber Plant (SIC- 2822) in Lake Charles, Louisiana on November 13 to 19, 1980. The evaluation was requested by a representative of Local 4-500, Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union on behalf of 49 employees. A medical questionnaire was given to exposed workers and to 23 nonexposed workers. Concentrations of methyl-chloride (74873), nuisance particulates, zinc-stearate (557051), aluminum-chloride (7446700), and hydrogen-chloride (7647010), were all below the OSHA standards for those substances, with the exception of 1 sample of methyl-chloride which was at the OSHA ceiling of 210.0 milligrams per cubic meter. The medical questionnaire revealed no differences between responses of exposed and nonexposed workers. The authors conclude that there is no substantial evidence of a health hazard due to exposure to any of the substances, nor any health effects that can be attributed to methyl-chloride. They recommend the use of respirators during the dryer shift operations. Special care should be taken in storage and handling of aluminum-chloride. Equipment should be inspected on a regular basis.
