Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for chloroprene (126998), toluene (108883), dichlorobutadiene (1653196), dichlorobutene (11069195), and trichlorobutene (51023224) at EI DuPont Company (SIC-2822), Louisville, Kentucky, in February and April 1979. The request for the evaluation was made by the Neoprene Craftsman Union out of concern that employees had an increased rate of cancer and respiratory problems due to chemical exposures at the facility. An earlier company retrospective cohort mortality study of 1575 male workers was reanalyzed. Thirty seven workers from three shifts were interviewed. Chloroprene concentrations ranged up to 1200 parts per million (ppm). Fifty three percent of the samples exceeded the NIOSH recommended standard of 1.0ppm and 0.5 percent of the samples exceeded the OSHA standard of 25ppm. Dichlorobutadiene concentrations ranged up to 3.9ppm. The concentrations of toluene, dichlorobutene, and trichlorobutene were below the relevant standards. No medical problems associated with occupational exposures were noted. Review of the cohort study showed no connection between chloroprene exposure and increased risk of mortality. The authors conclude that a health hazard due to overexposure to chloroprene exists at the facility. Recommendations include continuous evaluation and updating of control devices and periodic surveillance of former workers in the cohort study.
