Description:An evaluation of possible health effects among firefighters (SIC- 9224) in Shelby Township, Michigan, following a fire at Liquid Disposal Incorporated (a storage facility for waste oils, volatile, and semivolatile wastes) was conducted in July 1983. The evaluation was requested by the firefighter’s union out of concern for possible health effects and to obtain information about decontaminating personal protective gear and equipment. Particular concern was expressed for possible exposure to 2,3,7,8- tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (51207319) (TCDD). A medical questionnaire was administered to 35 firefighters and 6 police officers who were at the fire site. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) analyzed environmental samples, including water used to decontaminate the firefighter equipment, for TCDD, other dibenzo-p- dioxins, and dibenzofurans. The firefighters and police officers reported only minor health effects associated with smoke and fumes. One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation. None of the samples contained TCDD, other dibenzo-p-dioxins, or dibenzofurans. The EPA authorized replacing the firefighters' clothing, gear, and equipment, as decontamination was impractical and too costly. The author concludes that no serious health effects have resulted from chemical exposures at the fire.
