Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for total and respirable particulates, hydrocarbons, formaldehyde (50000), carbon- monoxide (630080), carbon-dioxide (124389), nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide (7446095) at the National Endowment for the Arts (SIC- 9199), Washington, DC, in July 1983. The evaluation was requested due to irritative symptoms experienced by several employees. Complaints originated mostly from four employees on one floor of the building. Ventilation, temperature, and relative humidity measurements were made. The concentrations of all compounds and particulates were well within established limits. Employee complaints included throat irritation, burning eyes, a metallic taste, and increased allergy symptoms. Ventilation, temperature, and humidity data indicated the ventilation systems were not balanced or controlled to provide uniform comfort in the building. The authors conclude that the complaints originated from ventilation system imbalance or poor control. Recommendations include balancing the air handling system with respect to air circulation and temperature, inspection of the system to ensure the integrity and proper functioning of the air filtration systems, and relocation of the thermostats for better control.
