Description:Electric and magnetic field strengths were measured around dielectric heaters to evaluate radiofrequency radiation (RFR) exposures at Kimball International Upholstered Products (SIC-2521), Jasper, Indiana at the request of the Indiana State Board of Health. The heaters used in the production of office furniture subassemblies operated at 7.6 megahertz (Model 36) and 6.5 megahertz (Model 42). None of the electric field strengths measured, ranging from not detectable to 330 volts squared per meter squared (V2/m2) exceeded Food and Drug Administration guidelines (59,200V2/m2 for Model 36 and 81,900V2/m2 for Model 42). Magnetic field strength emissions ranged from not detectable to 0.008 amperes squared per meter squared (A2/m2) compared to FDA guidelines of 0.47A2/m2 for Model 36 and 0.64A2/m2 for Model 42. At 5 centimeters (cm) the magnetic field emissions were higher than guidelines, but operators were not exposed to these levels as they normally stand at least 30cm from the heater. The author concluded that there is no RFR hazard to employees working with these heaters, and no control measures need to be implemented. Operators are cautioned not to stand closer than normal to the heater when the radiofrequency power is activated.
