Description:The management of Parkway Products, Inc. (SIC-3079), Cincinnati, Ohio, requested an evaluation of one worker exposed to 4,4'- methylene-bis-2-chloroaniline (101144) (MBOCA) while cleaning out a machine which mixes MBOCA with a polymer resin. Medical and occupational histories, dermatological exam, serial serum liver and renal function tests, urinalyses, and urine MBOCA levels were obtained from this worker, a urethane molder. Urine MBOCA levels ranged from 1707 parts per billion 9 hours after the accident to nondetectable 11 days later. An environmental evaluation was also made at the facility. The authors conclude that the MBOCA exposure experienced by this worker did not result in any acute medical condition, but that long term effects cannot be predicted. The production of MBOCA cured polyurethane cast products involves potential dermatological exposure to MBOCA. The authors recommend that the exposed worker receive continued medical surveillance for bladder cancer detection with annual urinalysis and urine cytology testing. Also recommended were: an evaluation of the current ventilation and isolation of MBOCA processes
frequently washing the MBOCA operating areas
enforcing the daily change in protective workclothes
enforcing use of impermeable gloves and safety goggles
encouraging showering by all exposed workers, and continued periodic safety meetings.
