Description:An employee representative of the San Francisco Opera Costume Shop (SIC-2389) requested an investigation of possible exposure to chemical substances by craftspersons and textile artists. Seven or eight employees work in the shop during the opera season. The artist wears coveralls, an apron, safety glasses, and protective gloves. In the costume shop, shoes were stripped of wax and spray painted, and hats were shaped using shellac. Medallions, helmet pieces and masks were cast. No overexposure to chemicals was found during cloth stripping and dying operations, boot deglazing, hat lacquering, fabric painting or casting operations. No health complaints were received from the employees. During boot spray painting, two personal air samples contained methylene-chloride at 11.9 and 25 parts per million: both above the NIOSH recommended criteria for methylene-chloride exposure. The authors conclude that workers were overexposed to methylene-chloride. The authors recommend construction of a permanent spray booth, use of spray paint not containing methylene-chloride, casting in the spray booth, use of a glove box to weigh out dyes, and use of a storage cabinet for materials not in use.
