Description:In response to a request from the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, National Park Service (SIC-2879), Van Buren, Missouri, an earlier survey was widened to evaluate exposure of the Service's employees to chlordane (57749). A total of 680 air samples were taken in 36 buildings between January 1 to 6 and on September 9, 1984. Chlordane concentrations ranged from 0.02 to 210 micrograms/cubic meter (microg/m3)
58 samples exceeded the 5microg/m3 National Research Council criterion. Of these, 36 were taken in crawl spaces, 19 in interiors of buildings, and three in exterior basement entries. Medical studies of 18 park employees and family members and ten forest service maintenance workers included health history questionnaires and blood tests. No pattern of symptoms or medical conditions were reported. Park service employees and families lived in homes where chlordane levels ranged from 0.79 to 4.6 parts per billion (ppb)
their serum chlordane levels ranged from less than 1.0 to 2.0ppb. No ambient chlordane levels were found for forest service workers, although five had helped with decontamination of forest service buildings. One had a serum chlordane concentration of 24.0ppb. The authors conclude that while no health effects have been found which are attributable to chlordane exposure, environmental sampling suggests a potential for harmful exposure. Recommendations include closing a few buildings with high chlordane levels and installation of a vapor barrier and positive ventilation in crawl spaces.
