Description:In response to a request from Olson Industries (SIC-3471), Denver, Colorado, a study was made of employee exposures to electroplating, machine, spot welding, and soldering chemicals in use at the facility. Determinations were made for chromium (7440473) and hexavalent chromium (18540299), nickel (7440020), 1,1,1- trichloroethane (71556), sulfuric-acid (7664939), hydrochloric-acid (7647010), oil mists, and trace metals in personal and area air samples. At the time of the survey, none of the detected levels exceeded the established limits from OSHA, NIOSH, or the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. However, it was cautioned that continued examination of the ventilation system be performed to ensure its proper working, particularly in the area of the chromic-acid (1333820) tanks with their potential generation of substantial mist. It was also suggested that chromium exposures be reduced to as low a level as possible due to the suspicion of excess cancer mortality rates among chrome platers. Face shields, chemical goggles, splash aprons, arm coverings, gloves, and boots should be available for employees working in chemical mixing and addition jobs. Good work practices and personal hygiene should be stressed.
