Description:In response to a request from the Commonwealth of Kentucky Labor Cabinet, an evaluation was undertaken of potential occupational exposures to radiofrequency (RF) radiation produced during the heating of plastic parts at Pioneer Vocational/Industrial Services, Inc. (SIC-8331), Danville, Kentucky. The company was a nonprofit corporation providing handicapped persons with job/worker analysis, job selection and career development assistance. A 4-kilowatt radiofrequency heat sealing unit was used to seal plastic parts. Radiofrequency radiation levels at 27.12 megahertz at the operator position ranged from nondetectable to 1000 volts for the electric field and were nondetectable for the magnetic field. The highest operator induced body current level measured was 65 milliamperes. All these levels were significantly below all current occupational exposures limits. During the interviews conducted there were no symptoms reported which would have been consistent with radiofrequency exposure. The authors conclude that no health hazard from radiofrequency radiation existed at the time of the survey. The authors recommend measures to reduce other observed safety hazards.
