Description:In response to a request from a joint management/union team at the Mercury Marine (SIC-3519) main machine and assembly facility in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, an investigation was begun into noise exposures at that site. The company employed about 1,500 workers on three shifts in the production of outboard marine engines. The major operations at the site included machining of engine parts, assembly of the parts into the finished product, and the quality testing of every outboard engine produced there. Personal noise exposure measurements were collected over a 2-day period of time. The mean 8-hour time weighted average (TWA) noise exposure was 86.6 decibels-A (dBA) for all operations measured. Of the 18 dosimeter samples taken, 13 exceeded the NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit of 85dBA. Several types of hearing protection devices were worn in the facility. The major sources of noise included the use of compressed air in several operations and outboard motor noise generated during wet and dyno testing operations. The author concludes that workers in the machining, assembly, and testing departments were exposed to potentially harmful noise levels. The author recommends that a hearing conservation program and noise control measures be instituted.
