Description:An investigation was made into possible hazardous working conditions at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, located in St. Marys, Ohio. Potential hazards were evaluated for seven different departments. In the receiving department, exposure to carbon-monoxide (630080) generated by forklift trucks was not a problem for workers near transportation aisles, but for workers in confined spaces, it is possible these trucks will generate potentially dangerous concentrations of carbon-monoxide and auxiliary ventilation may be needed. Employees in the Richardson system and Banbury were potentially at risk of development of adverse health effects based on the results of air sampling, employee interviews, and an evaluation of the toxicity of the materials handled. Ventilation controls and care in handling materials appear to be adequate in the fabric coating department. Exposure to solvents during paint mixing was not significant nor were there significant solvent vapors measured during paint spraying operations. Exposure to 1,1,1- trichloroethane (71556) for the degreaser operator was below the permissible limits. Heat and smoke problems in the Molding French Oil Presses department needed further revaluation. No significant health hazards were found in the wire brushing work area, but checks should be made to assure that the most appropriate forms of eye and face protection are being used. In the reclamation department, improvements were made in engineering controls in the Tocco unit and exposures for the salt bath operator to caustic materials were minimal.
