  • Description:
Parents play an important role in supporting the health and well-being of children and adolescents at home and at school. When parents are engaged in their children’s school activities, their children get better grades, choose healthier behaviors, and have better social skills. Parent engagement in school is also associated with helping their children to avoid unhealthy behaviors. Parents can be effective advocates and bring about positive changes in their children’s school. Equipping parents with the knowledge and skills to support a healthy school environment is a key strategy for improving their children’s overall health and academic success.

The purpose of this guide is to explain how the resources for Parents for Healthy Schools can be used with and for parents. Resources for Parents for Healthy Schools are designed to motivate and educate parents to help create healthy school environments and give parents ideas for how they can learn about and help with

➜ Improving the school nutrition environment and services.

➜ Increasing opportunities for physical activity in schools (i.e., comprehensive school physical activity programs).

➜ Supporting schools in managing chronic health conditions.
