<italic>congolensis</italic> [dur&#x02033;m&#x00259;-tof&#x02032;&#x0012d;-l&#x00259;s con-g&#x0014d;-len&#x02032;sis]</title><p>From the Greek <italic>derma</italic> (skin) + <italic>philos</italic> (loving), <italic>Dermatophilus congolensis</italic> is a Gram-positive, aerobic actinomycete, and facultatively anaerobic bacteria (<xref rid="F1" ref-type="fig">Figure 1</xref>). <italic>D. congolensis</italic> infects the epidermis and produces exudative dermatitis termed dermatophilosis that was previously known as rain rot, rain scald, streptotrichosis, and mycotic dermatitis.</p><fig position="float" id="F1" fig-type="figure"><label>Figure 1</label><caption><p>Photomicrograph of <italic>Dermatophilus congolensis</italic>, showing a Giemsa-stained, Gram-positive bacteria. Source: Dr. Jerrold Kaplan, Centers for Disease Control, 1965.</p></caption><graphic xlink:href="21-2573-F1" position="float"/></fig><p>In 1915, Ren&#x000e9; Van Saceghem (<xref rid="F2" ref-type="fig">Figure 2</xref>), a Belgian military veterinarian stationed at a veterinary laboratory in the former Belgian Congo (thus, the species name <italic>congolensis</italic>), reported <italic>D. congolensis</italic> from exudative dermatitis in cattle. Local breeders and veterinarians had observed the disease since 1910, but the causal agent was not identified.</p><fig position="float" id="F2" fig-type="figure"><label>Figure 2</label><caption><p>Ren&#x000e9; Van Saceghem (1884&#x02013;1965).
