    • Description:
"This Alert was directed toward all workers who may be exposed to natural rubber latex. Workers exposed to latex gloves and other products containing natural rubber latex may develop allergic reactions such as skin rashes; hives; nasal, eye, or sinus symptoms; asthma; and shock. Particularly among health care workers, the incidence of such symptoms seems to have increased in past years. Case reports were presented of six workers who developed latex allergy following occupational exposures. These included a laboratory technician who developed asthma symptoms after wearing latex gloves while performing blood tests, a 33 year old woman who had worked for 7 years as an inspector at a medical supply company including inflating latex gloves coated with cornstarch, a nurse whose respiratory symptoms became so severe she had to leave her occupation, a midwife who eventually went into shock after a routine gynecological examination during which latex glove were used, a physician who collapsed minutes after putting on a pair of latex gloves, and an intensive care nurse who went into severe shock after putting on latex gloves at work. Precautions for those who have latex allergy were discussed." - NIOSHTIC-2
